My family was all sitting around the TV watching something and scrolling on their phones and not talking to each other. My mom suggested we head down to the beach. Everybody murmured noncommittally. A couple minutes passed. I spoke up, “Wait should we go to the beach? Let’s talk about this. It’s only like two and a half hours away.”

Everybody consented. I ran off to pack a bag with some beach clothes, and some clothes for dinner. I started putting on my shoes and my brother made fun of me for always lacing my shoes too tight. I said that I don’t lace my shoes too tight, and he was like, “Oh yeah? Well then how come when you run through a puddle you kick so much water up?”
