Tofu
2020-06-15
Me and my friend O. were in a huge college lecture hall.
The content of the lecture was supposed to have something to do with us being ghosts and about how to do a good haunting, but the professor wasn’t there and the students were clowning around.
O. was down by the podium goofing off, and I was in my seat squeezing the bananas out of raw block of tofu in my fist. It was wringing out like a wet sponge, water running down down my forearm, rolling off my elbow and pooling on the carpet.
Somebody behind me asked if they could squeeze the tofu, and I handed it to them, but when they tried to squeeze it, they weren’t able to squeeze any more water out of it.

Commentary:
O. worked at the same company I did, and quit about a year before I got laid off. He quit for ethical reasons. He had been working with a bigoted client for over a year and didn’t see any other way of getting off the project.
I’ve had a lot of really great experiences with him outside of work, as friends, despite not being that close with him, and despite not doing that great a job of keeping up with him.
