Young Fauci

2020-06-18

I was hanging out on the streets of what I assume based on television was a New York City neighborhood.

Young Fauci was there in full 1970s regalia and looked cool as hell. He was giving a lecture or demonstration, seemingly on crime scene investigation, to a group of gathered young people, as though this was some kind of a class. He was kneeling by a steel barricade gate, striking the top of it lightly with his fingers to indicate where a projectile might bounce off it.

He had one of his students stand back from the fence about 30 feet or so with an armfull of large Red Delicious apples. He hurled the apples at the gate one by one, much like the scene from Twin Peaks when Cooper is tossing rocks at the bottles. The apples that hit their target struck the top of the gate where Fauci indicated, and they broke, and a spray of apple pieces soon covered the sidewalk behind the gate.

Fauci and the kids studied the pattern a while.

Later, class disbanded and I approached Fauci as he was leaving and we chatted as we walked together for a few blocks. He was clever and personable and seemed to know me from somewhere, and also seemed to know that Trump and COVID-19 were looming in his future and it seemed to color all of his good humor with sadness.
