dozens dreams

curl

2020-06-05

Second night in a row of dreaming of text, dreaming of programming.

This time was something about downloading a super groovy and weird pdf manual for curl, probably a reference to this other super groovy, cool, and weird pdf that I started reading yesterday about notcurses 1.

As I just said on irc:

08:30 i started reading that notcurses book yesterday and I am enchanted with it. the content is interesting but I also just love the packaging and the delivery. the formatting and the pictures and the nested footnotes… it is a joy to read

08:31 I feel like I’m reading an old why publication, or something by the original discordians

I have this recurring programming dream / quasi-nightmare that I can never fully remember. It’s fundamentally something about commit messages and the accidentally merging of two worlds: a personal one and a professional one.

It’s as though I accidentally rebased my working branch off my entire peronal history and tried to open a pull request with that history.

It’s as though you accidentally emailed your boss and coworkers an archive of your personal and embarrassing and thought to be buried and dead myspace posts and livejournal entries and other attempts by your younger self at serious, secret blogs that turned out just as angsty as anything else you wrote at the that time.

It’s a feeling of vulnerability through technology, of being laid bare and naked and exposed in the permanence of commit hashes. Of having your inadequacies preserved for all time in the merge notes in your changelog.md.
